THURSDAY, DECEMBER 18

In Our Own Write, the Center’s reading series for emerging LGBT writers, features poets, fiction writers and playwrights in the early stages of their careers. Many have published first novels or collections; others are seeking publication. The winners of the open-call submissions will read from their works. 7 p.m. at the LGBT Community Center.

Come to a signing for “Art – A Sex Book” by John Waters and Bruce Hainley. Based on the idea that contemporary art is all about sex, Waters and Hainley have selected and carefully arranged a wide range of work, from startling graphic depictions of the body and sexual acts to abstract images suggesting the erotic. Paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography and video - all find their place here. 6 p.m. at Ursus Books Chelsea.

Poetry event with Hickson, author of “ghettoheat.” The creative writing evolved into the conception of his debut book, which Hickson never intended to print; until his best friend read excerpts of his work—encouraging him to become an entrepreneur— focusing on self-publishing, distributing, and marketing his own works; with intentions of publishing other talented authors. Hickson’s vision is to produce quality works, with his favorite subjects being his people—the inner-city voices of America. 7 p.m. at Creative Visions bookstore, free.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 21

MONDAY, DECEMBER 22

“Stone Butch Blues” by Leslie Feinberg is back in print. Come to a book signing to celebrate the new edition. This first novel (with a new afterward by the author) follows the sexual travails of lesbian Jess Goldberg. At its start she is a girl who feels confused by strict ideas about gender and who wonders if she might be a “he-she” since people often ask whether she is a boy or a girl. Constantly searching, she quickly moves from trying on her father’s suits to visiting bars and transforming herself into a full-blown “butch,” complete with her own dildo. 7 p.m. at the International Action Center second floor.
