With a standing room only crowd in attendance, Arlene P. Bluth was sworn in as a judge of the Civil Court of the City of New York, after having won election in November. Bluth, a lesbian, is a former board member of the Stonewall Democratic Club of New York City, the citywide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Democratic club, and is currently a board member of LeGaL, the Lesbian & Gay Law Association of Greater New York.

Bluth is also a past Democratic district leader on Manhattan’s East Side and member of the Eleanor Roosevelt Democratic Club.

Among the speakers at Judge Bluth’s induction were U.S. Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, New York City Councilwoman Margarita Lopez (pictured here on the left with Bluth after the induction ceremony) and New York state Assemblymen Denny Farrell, Jonathan Bing and Steven Sanders.

In her comments, Maloney said, “Arlene Bluth has dedicated herself in service to others throughout her career… Arlene Bluth is a highly qualified judge who will demonstrate intelligence, sound judgment, strong moral values, compassion, and a great sense of humor and humility while serving on the bench.”

During her own remarks, Bluth took time to thank a broad array of supporters for their commitment to nominating diverse judicial candidates for the Democratic Party line.
