Opponents of gay marriage have gotten enough signatures to put a referendum on the ballot for November 24 in Taiwan. Since the Constitutional Court ruled that the country must equalize rights for same-sex couples, a proposal from right wing forces in Taiwan proposed establishing civil unions instead of marriage for gay couples.

Signatures for an LGBTQ proposal to open marriage to gay and lesbian couples are still under review. Should the civil union proposal prevail, a new court challenge could be made arguing that civil unions do not in practice accord equal rights to gay couples.
