Police are searching for an unidentified man in connection the death of 33-year-old Yahira Nesby, a transgender woman who was murdered at her apartment in Brooklyn on December 19.

The NYPD released surveillance video footage on December 27 of a man they say is between 30 and 35 years of age, has a dark complexion, is six feet tall, and weighs approximately 250 points. Police are trying to determine his identity.

When cops first arrived at Nesby’s apartment at 178 Rockaway Parkway in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, they found her with gunshot wounds to the chest. Emergency medical responders pronounced her dead at the scene.

Police initially questioned a 39-year-old man who was fleeing the building at the time of Nesby’s death, but he was subsequently released.

The man police are looking for was last seen donning a black shirt with a black jacket, black jogging pants, white socks, gray sneakers, and a black winter hat with white letters on the hat. Police circulated surveillance video footage of the suspect from when he was walking in front of 196 Rockaway Parkway, which is just steps away from the apartment building where Nesby lived.

More than 30 of Nesby’s friends, chosen family, and loved ones huddled near her apartment on December 23 to hold a vigil honoring her life. Candles were lit and signs were on display remembering Nesby and other trans women who have been killed this year.

The Human Rights Campaign has tallied 25 transgender or non-binary people who have suffered violent deaths so far this year, only four shy of last year’s total number. Transgender women of color make up most of the trans people who have been murdered this year.
